Train Station Storage

Train stations are the most common storage points. Major cities' high-speed rail stations almost all have them:

Self-service lockers — Usually near the waiting hall or exit corridors. Three sizes: small (backpack, ¥10-15/day), medium (20" suitcase, ¥15-25/day), large (24-28" suitcase, ¥20-30/day). Scan QR code to open, scan again to retrieve. Fully self-service, supports WeChat/Alipay.
Staffed counters — Windows labeled "Luggage Storage" (行李寄存). Charged per piece, ¥10-30/bag/day. Good for oversized items (28"+, bicycles, strollers — things that don't fit in lockers).
Location — Not every station has them. Before you go, search on Amap for "[station name] + luggage storage" to confirm. Some storage points are in commercial areas outside the station, not inside.

Note: Station lockers fill up during peak season (Golden Week, Spring Festival). Arrive early for a better chance. Some lockers have a maximum storage time (usually 72 hours) — overdue items may be cleared out.

Airport Storage

Price — More expensive than stations. Usually ¥30-50/bag/day, more for oversized items.
Location — Both international and domestic departure areas have storage counters. Follow the "Baggage Storage / 行李寄存" signs.
When to use — Long layovers or arriving at the airport too early. If it's not strictly necessary, airport storage is the worst value.
Beijing Capital Airport, Shanghai Pudong Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport all offer 24-hour storage.

Hotel Storage (Most Recommended)

Free storage after check-out — This is the best deal. When checking out, tell the front desk "I'm leaving this afternoon/evening, can you store my luggage?" Nearly all hotels offer this for free.
Storage before check-in — If your train/flight arrives early and the room isn't ready, you can also leave bags at the front desk and go explore.
Limitations — Generally same-day pickup. Overnight storage may not be possible. Ask about the latest pickup time in advance.
International chains (Marriott, Hilton, etc.) and budget hotels (Home Inn, Hanting, JI Hotel, etc.) all provide free storage — it's an industry standard.

Mall Lockers

Pricing and Safety

Best Choice by Scenario

Here's my priority order — just follow this:

Checking out of a hotel same day — Hotel front desk free storage is the first choice. Most convenient, safest, and if the hotel is near attractions, drop and go.
Just arrived, haven't checked in — If the hotel is downtown, go store there first. If the hotel is far (e.g., near the airport), find a storage app point near the station/attractions.
Transit between cities — Arrived in a new city, don't want to drag luggage to the hotel? Store at the station first, explore light for half a day, then pick up and head to the hotel.
Rainy day / big shopping day — Mall free lockers are most convenient. Shop, then pick up on the way out. No dragging luggage in the rain.

What You Can't Store

Flammable/explosive items — Lighters, aerosol cans, alcohol. Security and storage points won't accept them.
Fresh/perishable food — Strong odors, leaking — not accepted.
Live animals — Don't even think about it.
Oversized/overweight items — Self-service lockers have size limits. 28"+ suitcases may not fit — use staffed storage. Bicycles and strollers require staffed storage.

Storage Duration and Fees

Most storage points charge per 24-hour cycle, not per "day":

Self-service lockers: Going over 24 hours automatically adds a day's fee, charged when you scan to retrieve.
Staffed counters: Also charge per day. Going past the latest pickup time (usually 10-11 PM) counts as the next day.
Storage apps: More flexible — some charge hourly (¥2-5/hour), switching to daily after a threshold.

Disaster Scenario 1: Lockers Are Full

Problem: You arrive at the train station, all self-service lockers are taken, and the staffed counter has a 20-person queue.

What to do:

Open the "Cún Zhī Jǐ" or "Tú Jiǎn Dān" WeChat mini-program and search for nearby storage points — they may have availability.
Or try asking a nearby hotel if they'll store your bag for a small fee (some hotels accommodate non-guests).
Last resort: Drag your luggage along. Many attractions (the Forbidden City, museums, etc.) have luggage storage — but you need a ticket to use it.

Problem: You stored your luggage, explored all afternoon, and come back to find the claim tag is gone.
